The most complete Art Deco tour of Napier, this guided walk begins at the Napier Conference Centre. Headsets and earpieces are provided. You’ll hear the dramatic story of the 1931 earthquake and discover Art Deco: the style of the times in the 1930s. Wander past the Statue of Pania and the Soundshell, through Napier’s Art Deco Quarter, including visits to the interiors of some of the most stunning examples of this architectural style in the city. The tour will finish at the new Art Deco Centre in Memorial Square to view the movie about the 1931 Earthquake and the rebuild of Napier. ~ 2 hour tour ~ Departing from Napier Conference Centre $28 inclusive of GST per person Minimum of 6 people needed to go ahead, maximum of 32. |
You will head out along the scenic Marine Parade with seascape views of Cape Kidnappers. Then, trundling through the city you will get to marvel at some of the world’s most stunning examples of Art Deco architecture. You will even be taken where no other tour bus can take you: right into the elegant heart of Napier, the main street which is otherwise largely a pedestrian zone. From the town centre you will head over Bluff Hill; then on into Ahuriri, once the old port village. The engaging commentary outlines the history of the 1931 earthquake and the city’s rebuilding and you will hear about many aspects of life in the region such as it’s workforce, industries, lifestyle and culture. Your short tour stop is at the Customs house with pictorial stories of the region over time.
