Dr William BaberM.B., Ch.B., F.R.C.S., F.R.A.C.S SMO, Health NZ - Waitematā, NZ
I have had a passion for helping people with hearing loss, my original inspiration being the otologists I worked with during my training to be an ORL surgeon in the UK at the Royal National Throat, Nose and Ear hospital. On returning to NZ in 1974, I did further Fellowship training in base of skull surgery in the USA and brought back innovative techniques for vestibular schwannoma surgery, having also met early cochlear implant surgeons there, including William House from the House Clinic. I became a trustee of the Deafness Research Foundation, now the Hearing Research Foundation, in 1985, implanting NZ’s first CI recipient, with Ron Goodey in 1986. I was President of the NZSO-HNS between 2007-09 and was Clinical Director of the ORL Department, Waitemata DHB from 1997- 2015. I am also a trustee for the NCIT and have been fortunate to have been part of the exponential growth of the CI program, my passion for improvement in the hearing status of New Zealanders remaining undiminished.

Does the present represent a watershed in our lives?
Findings
Studies have shown that it is often presumed that the present represents the endpoint of advance but it can be demonstrated that all ages and genders show progression forwards throughout their lives.
Discussion
Appropriate planning can provide rewarding avenues for aging successfully and the experience gained in a lifetime of work is invaluable for those following.
Conclusion
Aging is not the end but merely an inevitable step forwards in a person's life.
