Dr Juan Avellaneda

Laryngology Fellow, Auckland DHB, Auckland, NZ
Dr Juan Avellaneda is a Laryngology fellow at Auckland City Hospital. His clinical training lies in treatment of voice and airway disorders and difficulties with swallowing.  Upon completion of this fellowship program, he will return to his home country of Colombia, to apply his skills and learnings in a country with few trained laryngologists.  Dr. Avellaneda’s interest in laryngology was born, in part, due to his passion for music and singing, which he inherited from his father, a vocalist musician and laryngologist.

Juan received his M.D. from Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. Following his M.D. studies, Dr. Avellaneda completed a training program from the Harvard School of Public Health, in Principles and Practice in Clinical Research.  After which, he pursued his Otolaryngology training at Universidad del Rosario in Colombia, while also completing elective, international rotations in New Zealand, Canada, and Mexico, becoming Chief of Residents during his last year of residency.

Laryngectomy: A Nurse Oriented Perspective

Laryngectomy is a frequent procedure that is performed within ENT-HNS services and which brings with it post-operative challenges for the patient, his/her family and one's healthcare providers.  Nursing care is a fundamental pillar in laryngectomized patients' recovery, with nurses accompany patients through this new and often-difficult adaptation and acceptance process.

This nurse-oriented conference will address the key components of the anatomy and physiology of the larynx, to help understand the ramifications of laryngectomy surgery.  Different types of laryngectomies and indications will be reviewed, while delving into the most-common type thereof; the total laryngectomy.  Finally, we will address important considerations and possible complications both in the immediate and late postoperative period, as well as key points in long-term follow-up.
